Dune: Part Two

Power has a price, and prophecy has a cost.

9.1

2024 · Directed by Denis Villeneuve

Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler

Synopsis

Paul Atreides unites with the Fremen to plot revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family, all while wrestling with visions of the holy war his rise might ignite across the galaxy.

The Review

The second half of Villeneuve's adaptation is bigger, louder, and considerably more confident than the first. Where Part One spent its runtime setting the board, this installment lets the desert breathe and the politics tighten. Chalamet's Paul curdles from reluctant heir to something closer to a warning, and the film never lets you cheer for him without a shiver of doubt. The sandworm-riding sequence alone justifies the biggest screen you can find. What lingers, though, is the film's refusal to resolve its central tension neatly: this is a story about the seduction of chosen-one narratives, told by people who clearly distrust them.
